In my opinion, one of the most spectacular places in all the Southern Appalachians is Roan Mountain and the Roan Highlands. Roan Mountain stands at 6,285 feet, making it one of the highest peaks east of the Rocky Mountains. This place is also home to the largest concentration of Catawba Rhododendron (Rhododendron catawbiense) in the world. In June of each year, the mountain explodes in an incredible display of color. In the photograph above, which was taken well after the peak of blooming, hundreds of rhododendron blooms can still be seen.
