Gray's Lily (Lilium grayi) was discovered by father of American botany Asa Gray in 1841. It is an extremely rare flower found in a few highland bald areas of Tennessee and North Carolina (particularly the Roan Mountain Highlands) and almost nowhere else on earth. These intense red blooms have been beckoning wildflower enthusiasts and nature photographers for many years. Unfortunately, they also attract poachers as well as those who are simply ignorant of the significance of this plant. If you happen to be lucky enough to spot one, by all means take a photo! Please leave the plant undisturbed, however, so that others may enjoy the Gray's Lily for generations to come.
