Canyon is an 85 acre natural wonder located deep in the foothills
of the Appalachian Mountains in Alabama. This tiny yet spectacular
canyon is home to several unique plants and animals, from glow
worms known only to exist in a few places on earth, to an Eastern/Canadian
Hemlock thought to be the world's largest (the glow worms mentioned
above are Arachnocampa luminosa, known commonly as "dismalites").
Witch's Cavern is an eerily beautiful location of the canyon where
a labyrinth of moss-covered boulders reach skyward. This photograph
was taken during the day. However, nature puts on an impressive
show at night as well, when millions of tiny Dismalites make the
walls here light up like a sky full of stars!
