Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the crown jewel of the Appalachian Mountains, attracts millions of visitors each year. One popular destination is Roaring Fork Nature Trail. Several old homeplaces are scattered along the eight-mile loop, the last remnants of the hearty pioneers who once called this place home. In the photograph above, a sleuce made to carry water from Roaring Fork to a small tub mill overflows. Reagan's Mill, as it is known, was once used to grind corn meal for the local families who relied on the rocky soil of this otherwise lush landscape for survival.
